9 Must-Have Tools for your ALM Toolbox in Today’s Market

Core deposits continue to surge, cost of funds are declining (for now!), mortgage originations are soaring, net interest margins are getting squeezed, again, and loan loss provisions are expected to take a hit. CUs can’t afford to rely on the same financial tactics from previous years. Emily Hollis reveals the 9 tools you must consider for your ALM Toolbox including increasing loan volume, leveraging investment options, deploying hedges to lock in mortgage gains on sales, shoring up liquidity options and much more. Take back the same practical guidance other CUs are using to enhance earnings.

Speaker: Emily Hollis, CEO, ALM First

Performance Optimization in Uncertain Times

Another round of low interest rates and a flat yield curve, coupled with a Federal Reserve willing to tolerate more inflation, presents challenges to future financial performance.  Successful Credit Unions undergo strategy review and use robust modeling to find the optimal path to earnings, growth, and capital needs.  While statistical approaches to modeling may suggest an optimal path, the reality is your path is a function of your market area, risk appetite, ability to execute, and long-term goals.

In our session we will review various approaches to balance sheet structure and how each might perform in the coming years.  Does a more aggressive risk approach offer more gains than a “vanilla” or “barbell” approach.

Participants will take away:

  • An understanding of various balance sheet structure options.
  • A framework for assessing risk versus return of your optimal structure.

  • How to assess challenges in selecting assets and funding in today’s competitive and low-rate environment.

Speaker: Dave Koch, Director, Advisory Services, Abrigo

Panelists: Val Mindak, President & CEO, Park City CU;
Gary Perez, CEO, USC Credit Union
